Concept: Ontology

Ontology

In science, an Ontology identifies the kind and structure of items.

It seeks the classification and explanation of entities.

Ontology in Sintelix

In Sintelix, the Ontology is used to classify Entities and Text References and Links, including their:

  • class: Entity, Text Reference or not marked up

  • colours used to highlight them

  • icon used to represent them

  • defaults, for viewing and interacting with them, for example Network Table View, Report layout and more.

When is it applied

An Ontology is applied during:

  • Ingestion

  • Network Creation.

Ontology during Ingestion

During Ingestion, the Ontology is used to mark up Text References, Entities and Links in Documents.

Ontology in the Collection

Every Collection has a default Ingestion configuration, with applies the linked Ontology.

The Ontology is used to:

  • mark up Text References, Entities and Links in Documents during Ingestion

  • when editing a Document

  • generating a Network of Nodes and Links

Viewing the Ontology

You can view the Ontology when:

  • Ontology: The Ontology identified in the Ingestion configuration applies to Documents in a Collection.

    • View a Document: When viewing a Document, the Text References, Entities and Links displayed are based on the Ontology.

    • Edit a Document: The Ontology is used to edit the Text References, Entities and Links.

  • Network Creation:

  • browsing the Documents in a Collection in the far left pane

  • editing a Document.

Configuration

The Ontology is selected in the Concept: Ingestion configuration.

Recommended Practice

It is recommended you have a single Ontology for your Project, that is applied to all Ingestion configurations, to ensure consistent results during Ingestion and when viewing Networks. For more information, see Ingestion, Ontology and Network Creation.
